The backcountry surrounding Aspen is a hiker's paradise. In fact, there is no better way to get back in touch with nature and explore the Aspen area than on foot.

The Elk and Sawatch Mountain Ranges surround the Roaring Fork Valley, in which the town of Aspen is nestled.  It is the “backcountry” of these ranges that will serve as our playground for this program.  The area offers tremendous hiking and scenery opportunities for intermediate and advanced hikers.  We will hike within picturesque locations such as Independence Pass, Buckskin Pass, Crater Lake, Cathedral Lake, Electric Pass, and the “world famous” Maroon Bells.

Daily hikes from 5 to 12 miles with elevation gains of 800’ to 2500‘ over moderate to steep terrain will be just part of your experience.  While hiking these wildflower covered mountains, your guides will be pointing out the natural history of the area and discussing the first (natives), second (miners), and third (the moderns) people to settle in this region.  In addition, hiking skills and techniques will be shared.  Mountain weather and safety will also be part of the week’s instruction.

Our home base will be in Snowmass Village Colorado, a short 6 miles from the famous town of Aspen. The accommodations and food in Snowmass Village (home to the 4000 acre Snowmass Ski Area) are a comfortable addition to the program.
